Student Spotlight: Luke Benoit – Advancing Compliance Through Insight and Experience

Advancing a Career in Compliance Through Education

Luke Benoit pursued a Master of Legal Studies (MLS) at Seattle University as a strategic step toward deepening his expertise and expanding his professional impact in compliance. With a strong foundation in NCAA compliance, Luke sought a program that would broaden his perspective and strengthen his understanding of risk management and institutional governance.

Before beginning the program, Luke served as a Compliance Coordinator within the California State University, Sacramento athletic department. Since then, his career has progressed significantly. He is now the Director of Compliance at Southeastern Louisiana University.

Luke’s decision to enroll was driven by a desire to explore compliance in a broader context, beyond NCAA regulations. He was particularly interested in learning how compliance and risk management intersect across different industries and organizations. The MLS program offered that exact opportunity.

A Transformative Learning Experience

Luke says that his “Experience in the MLS program at Seattle University was excellent. I feel that I grew significantly in my professional life while pursuing this degree.” One of the most valuable aspects of the program was the ability to collaborate with other professionals in the compliance space, exchanging ideas that directly applied to real-world challenges.

Professor DiMarino was a positive influence. Having taken three of his courses, Luke found his guidance instrumental, especially during the capstone project. “He was always available to provide support, whether I needed help working through a challenge or a deeper explanation of complex material,” Luke notes. That mentorship played a key role in shaping a capstone project that was both practical and impactful.

Applying Knowledge to Real-World Impact

Throughout the program, Luke developed the ability to analyze compliance issues from multiple perspectives, an essential skill in today’s complex regulatory environment. Exposure to professionals outside the NCAA also broadened his understanding of how different organizations approach compliance and risk management.

Balancing full-time work with graduate coursework was initially a challenge, but Luke found his rhythm. In fact, his professional role often complemented his studies. “Many of the concepts from the program directly aligned with my responsibilities, allowing me to connect coursework with real-world application,” he explains.

That connection has already translated into tangible results. Luke has applied what he learned to strengthen institutional policies at his university, incorporating feedback from peers and professors to better mitigate risk and ensure compliance.

Looking Ahead and Words of Advice

Among his many accomplishments, Luke is most proud of completing his capstone project. Focused on supporting early-career NCAA compliance professionals, the project addressed challenges he personally faced and aimed to provide meaningful guidance to others entering the field.

Looking ahead, Luke sees the MLS degree as a gateway to new opportunities within NCAA compliance and beyond. The program has not only expanded his knowledge but also reshaped the way he approaches problem-solving and professional growth.

For those considering the program, Luke offers simple but powerful advice: “Take the leap and enroll. This program significantly expanded my understanding of compliance and elevated the way I approach my work. The experience helped shape new ideas and perspectives that will continue to guide me toward achieving my goals within the compliance industry.”
