A JD advantage job is a professional role in which a Juris Doctor (JD) degree may provide a hiring or performance advantage, even when passing a state bar exam or holding an active law license is not required. Why should prospective students of Seattle University’s Online Master of Legal Studies (MLS) in Compliance and Risk Management know about these career opportunities? Because many roles value legal knowledge and analytical skills beyond traditional legal practice.
Many JD advantage career paths may also be relevant to MLS graduates. Employers in fields such as compliance, risk management, and regulatory affairs often value professionals who can interpret legal requirements and apply them to organizational challenges. Seattle University’s MLS in Compliance and Risk Management helps professionals build these skills, although qualifications vary by position and employer.
JD Advantage Jobs and Skills
Several roles are known as JD advantage roles, in which individuals can apply their legal training, including legal analysis and the ability to interpret and synthesize laws, without necessarily working in a courtroom. A Master of Legal Studies (MLS) degree aligns well with these roles, as it provides training in legal research, writing, and legal structures that can be applied across various industries.
During a program webinar, Kelli Rodriguez, Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs at the School of Law, explained that this is an area where the MLS can align particularly well. Professionals in compliance and related fields may need to research, interpret, and synthesize legal requirements without practicing as attorneys. Hear more from Seattle University MLS alumni about the degree’s career impact and ROI.

The Seattle University Curriculum and JD Advantage Jobs
Seattle University’s MLS curriculum emphasizes foundational legal skills, including research, synthesis, and communicating legal information. The program prioritizes these transferable skills to prepare students to adapt to changes in the law throughout their careers. Lawyers appreciate it when someone understands the language they speak; similarly, technical professionals appreciate it when someone understands the technical requirements. Being able to speak both languages is incredibly valuable.
Seattle University’s online MLS in Compliance and Risk Management offers the option for a concentration in one of five areas:
- Healthcare Compliance
- Corporate Compliance
- Financial Compliance
- Data & Cybersecurity Compliance
- Sports Law Compliance
The structured, expertly designed program optimizes your learning potential. Students begin with a series of foundational courses in legal institutions, methods, and communication, including research and writing. Next, they move into the core aspects of compliance operations, such as investigation, auditing, and report writing. If applicable to their career goals, they can choose to develop specialized knowledge in one or more of the featured industries (healthcare, finance, data, cybersecurity, and sports).
Can You Get a JD Advantage Job With a Master of Legal Studies?
Some roles associated with JD Advantage careers may be open to professionals with an MLS. Some positions require a JD, while others may consider relevant graduate-level education and professional experience.
Seattle University MLS alumna, Danielle Schafer-Gardner, offers one example. After pursuing her MLS with a focus on data privacy and cybersecurity, she transitioned into privacy program management and later joined a data ethics team, where she works alongside attorneys.
During a Seattle University MLS webinar, Schafer-Gardner shared that the original posting for her current role listed several potential educational backgrounds, including a JD “or equivalent combination of education,” along with experience in areas such as data ethics, governance, data management, and legal compliance.
“My MLS cemented the intentionality of the career path I was building,” she said.
Her experience shows how an MLS can complement existing professional experience for certain law-adjacent opportunities, even though individual job requirements vary. Learn more about her experience here.

Senior professionals in areas such as compliance, contract and commercial management, financial risk, consulting, healthcare management, and government affairs may advance into well-compensated leadership roles. However, salary outcomes vary considerably by position and employer.
Anne Bayerkohler, a Seattle University MLS alumna, leveraged her legal education and background in audit and compliance to advance into a compliance director role.
